The month May opens with works by Jan Wessendorp (1940), a well-known Dutch contemporary artist in Bergen op Zoom.

The exhibition shows a selection of the oeuvre of this versatile artist whose works range from drawing and graphic to plastic arts (sculpture). Wessendorp creates figures and characters that show openness, even vulnerability, yet they are never defenceless let alone aggressive. They manifest themselves by their unusual look and posture. Despite their subdued emotions, one can sense the fear, compassion, happiness, loneliness and even some love there.

The exhibition “Teder Indringend” can be considered as a belated celebration of the Wessendorp’s 80th birthday. The shown works are of personal choice, in stead of a chronological overview of the artist’s career.

Our special thanks to Albert Hagenaars for the foreword and kind introduction to Jan Wessendorp’s works. Albert Hagenaars is a poet, book critic and writer of many books, with whom Jan Wessendorp has worked together in several art projects.

The catalogue is for you to keep and share.

SECRET

I am earth
But then again, not quite
And in secret, I give in
To underground, prospective delight

Free again from earthly weight
I am surrounded by sovereign light

But then again, not quite

translation: Jaqueline Ritzen

A PAINTER’S SUFFERING AND PURE LIGHT

Is there still a colour alive, to admire
A form to be found?
No muse to bring relief, to inspire.

The inscrutable grey is broken by burst of light
Again, form and colour unite
Voices stir within and set ablaze
This utter darkness in my recurring maze

Translation: Jaqueline Ritzen

Walk

Front and rear
Up and down
Sun and flower and I and leaf
To a mateless stature summarized.
Doortrild with Infinity Prayers
Canon
To be allowed to fulfil one of the names
Of that nameless power,
Which is front and back and below and above.

Obedient

Blood pulsates in
Dark cadences and
Compelling chords
And demands to be heard
and fulfilled,
It does not know any further and linger.

Back now, dear little,
Guilty,
I will be mennen and endure.

After a long and fierce fight
I have finally been able to force you.
However, it remains an uncommon
and precarious agreement
And in all your singing
It's still a restless desire.

To my deep sorrow,
Are you the innocent of our two,
My own brave animal,
I carry you into
An endless offing.

Man in Me

I give you ear and mouth
and skin and hand
To translate you into this world.
The deeds I want to
Are your words that determine me.

GOLD WIRE

Already I drown a thousand times in deeds,
That I do not recall wants.
In Wanen,
which I can't count.
But never,
Never
Breaks the thread that connects me
With light and life.

ON LIFE AND DEATH

"Jedes Wort aus Gottes Mund" *
Undulates through all spaces unloaded,
To the beach on the Lome blood
of the people.

Stuwend inserts into numbers
Without end the animal
Where behind I touch,
Rustles The Eternal Space
In its luminous boundaries.

"Jedes Wort aus Gottes Mund"
Lives in Unbreakable circles,
Who does not meet it,
Dies
Not among mortals.

Distinction

Who can say all sentences that are there,
To exploit a thousand goals.

But those words speak in which he lives,
Image of one life behind all appearances,
To unleash any benefit

Jan Wessendorp 1995

BLACK AND WHITE

Beautiful eyes,
Those unsettled grope
Through the dark corridors of the days.
A lightning bolt.
Heaven of Your Heart
Put me in lighter laze.

There will be no black,
After Zozeel light strikes.
We are sealed to purely white
In the dark corridors of the days

Jan Wessendorp 1995

House of Stone

Golden Dust cloud of blessing
Splintered by the endless procession.
This lead body stops her
And is sucked by a
Subterranean flood

Incomprehensible power
of Drift and love
Break the House of Stone,
in which heinous solitude
Self-reamed
And adds all the first parts again.
